Massive iPhone Security Threat DarkSword Malware Could Sneak In and Steal Your Data
A major new cybersecurity warning has revealed that hundreds of millions of iPhones could be at risk from a powerful malware tool called DarkSword if they are not running the latest software. Researchers have found that hacker groups have been using it to silently break into vulnerable devices around the world.
DarkSword works by chaining together multiple vulnerabilities in Apple’s operating system, meaning it uses several weak points at once to sneak onto a phone. Once exploited, DarkSword lets attackers access sensitive data such as messages, passwords, call history, location information, and even details from apps like cryptocurrency wallets — all without the user noticing.
The attacks mainly start when someone visits an infected website using the iPhone’s web browser. Just clicking on a link can be enough for the malware to start working, and in most cases, it quickly extracts information before erasing itself to avoid detection.
Devices running older versions of Apple’s software, specifically iOS 18.4 through 18.7, are the most at risk. It’s estimated that as many as 270 million iPhones worldwide could still be running those versions, putting them in danger of being affected.
DarkSword hasn’t just been spotted in one place — researchers have observed attacks in countries like Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, China, and Malaysia. Most of these attempts appear to be tied to well-organized hacker groups, including some believed to be linked to state-level espionage activities.
To protect themselves, iPhone users are strongly advised to update their devices to the newest available iOS version right away. Apple has patched the vulnerabilities used by DarkSword in the latest updates, and keeping software up to date remains the most important defense against this kind of threat.
