Multi-day outage caused by ransomware attack, confirms Dish Network

Dish Network, a satellite broadcast provider and TV giant, has confirmed that the multi-day network and service outage that started on Friday was caused by a ransomware attack. The outage affected various websites and networks owned and operated by Dish Network, as well as its call center phone numbers. Initially, Dish Network blamed VPN issues, but later confirmed in an 8-K form filed with the SEC that the outage was due to a cyber-security incident.

The company has not disclosed any further details about the attack, besides stating that data from its compromised systems was stolen, potentially containing personal information. Dish Network’s website is still partially functional, and the company has hired cybersecurity experts and outside advisors while notifying relevant law enforcement authorities. The attack allegedly targeted VMware ESXi servers.
