ChatGPT App Surpasses 500,000 Downloads in a Remarkable 6-Day Period

OpenAI’s ChatGPT app has achieved remarkable success in a short period of time, surpassing over 500,000 downloads within just six days of its launch. This outstanding performance was revealed through an analysis conducted by data.ai, an app intelligence provider.

During its initial U.S.-only launch phase, the ChatGPT app garnered 480,000 installs in the first five days on iOS alone, surpassing the download numbers of Bing (250,000) and Edge (195,000) on iOS. However, when considering all U.S. downloads across both app stores, Bing and Edge maintained a lead. Nevertheless, ChatGPT’s strong performance suggests it may soon overtake these search-focused alternatives.

Data.ai’s analysis also highlighted ChatGPT’s success in comparison to other AI chatbot apps in the U.S. With its 480,000 installs from May 18-22, ChatGPT ranked among the top five by downloads, competing against apps’ best five-day periods in 2023 on both the App Store and Google Play. It was only surpassed by the “Chat with Ask AI” app, which saw 590,000 installs from April 4-8, 2023.

Furthermore, ChatGPT’s launch performance in 2022 and 2023 positions it as one of the top new app debuts. With 480,000 installs within its first five days on iOS, it ranked as the second-largest app launch, trailing only Truth Social, which achieved 630,000 downloads. This achievement places ChatGPT in the >99.99th percentile for new app launches in the U.S. since 2022 on iOS, a testament to its exceptional reception among users.

While downloads alone do not reflect active usage, data.ai’s analysis did not provide precise figures on daily or monthly active users for ChatGPT at this stage. Accurate estimates of user engagement may take a few more weeks to compile as the app continues to gain traction and attract a dedicated user base.
